I read this book in one. sitting. It is currently 4:51am. I have tears running down my face. 5 STARS ARE YOU ACTUALLY KIDDING ME. At first when I was reading I thought I would dock some points for the specific pop culture references that will age the book in a couple years but you know what- I don't even care! That was such a beautiful story about love, trust, grief, anxiety, second chances, and hope. I was invested the entire time, this book almost had emily henry level banter, genuinely funny moments that made me crack up out loud, and just heart wrenchingly romantic scenes- the grip miss abby had on my heart my god. If anyone is reading this review please I'm begging, read this book so we can talk about it!!! HELP ME OKAY BYE IT IS 4:57AM NOW WHOOPS
It was really hard for me to connect with the main character for most of this book, I did believe that the two characters really loved each other but the external circumstances keeping them apart was wild since she was 38 and still trapped by her parent's expectations of her
Lovable characters that you want to root for, believable tension, roommate/forced proximity and fake dating tropes were used in a way where it felt natural and realistic, genuinely funny, complex main characters who feel like real/fully fleshed out people, emphasis on the importance of platonic love (!!!), etc etc!! I just adored this book, and really enjoyed the nick/jess dynamic daphne and miles had.
this book had a serious pacing issue!! war strategy for 40% of the book is not for me!! also where are the women!! the ending pissed me off!!
ok some positives- very unique magic system, love how we got to explore that more, pretty great action scenes when we actually HAD them omg, Vin is a badass and i liked her povs the best
deaths of some of the side characters were way too sudden it was literally like *chop* he’s gone and bam fade to black for this guy… where was the build up?? and the fact that they sent elend and vin out of the city only for them to come right back pissed me awfffff bc that felt so pointless…
I'm so curious why the author chose *that* to be the incident that trauma bonds them bc... I don't think I'd ever EVER be able to get over that let alone fall in love w that person no matter if it really wasn't his fault... hmm... plus with the conflict w parents I totally understood where they were coming from.
besides that... the chemistry between the main two was really well written, they felt like very real and layered characters, and I really bought their relationship. I kind of wish we got to see more with the tv show they worked on together, we really drifted away from that at the end there.
fun fact about me… leap year is one of my favorite rom com movies, and this book gave off those same exact vibes!! the forced proximity road trip, the grumpy x sunshine trope, hellooooo omg i literally couldn’t put it down. great banter, parts of the book genuinely made me laugh, and i love how the author explored themes of grief, love, and trust. loveeeed the side plot that felt like the Notebook but sapphic. a great read!!
right so this was book 3 and i didn’t have any desire to read the first two before this one lol but i had a fun time! this series focuses on a different set of characters each book and i was just interested in this pair. definitely missed out on some lore but i pieced it together. some of the writing was just wildd hahah
Absolutely adore these characters!! This volume primarily focused on the development of a new side of Nick & Charlie's relationship. A very quick read, fast paced, and just makes me excited for season 3 of heartstopper coming out this year in 2024!
