The only thing interesting about this book was the cover.

“Meat” and “Kids Who Come Back” saved it from 1 star.

This book is Convenience Store Woman on steroids. The same theme, basically the same protagonist and the same husband. Only this one is totally unhinged.

First quarter: almost DNF’ed because of explicitly described sexual abuse of a child. I firmly believe this should not be in a book. I hate when something like this is described in detail; I don’t need to spend 5 minutes reading about it to know how horrible it is. It is also such a serious theme that it felt inappropriate to read about it in such a weird, almost playful manner. The same goes for the victim shaming later on in the book.

The rest felt like a Grocery Store Woman do-over, but then with an alien instead of a grocery store woman.

And then came the last quarter of the book. THAT was the kind of insane absurdity I was looking for. Redeemed the book a little bit, even got it up to 3 stars, and made it feel very different from The Grocery Woman.

ALL THE TRIGGER WARNINGS THOUGH. Seriously. This book is easily the weirdest I have ever read.

I have always loved stories of non-conforming, annoyingly independent and powerful women. Cleopatra, Medusa, and Circe are great examples. Originally written as some sort of Evil Seducer archetype, they are never much more than man-eating devils. Take that fear of feminine strength and independence, of women who don’t abide by traditional roles and expectations, and shove it somewhere Helios can’t see because modern writers are reclaiming their stories.

‘Circe’ revolves around the story of, surprise surprise, the minor Goddess and witch Circe. In Greek myths, she is known as the witch who turns men into pigs.

At the beginning of the book, Circe’s voice evokes innocence, naivety, and youth. Throughout the story, it changes into that of an ancient, tired, weathered woman. Amazing how Miller pulled that off. Through Circe’s story, Miller explores a plethora of topics: family dynamics, mortality, identity, love, death, motherhood, and more.

The prose, plot, and structure are poetic. There is a balance in this book that feels so well thought- and worked out that it makes Miller a sorceress in her own right. I am a sucker for creative and bizarrely relatable metaphors that feel just right. There is plenty of that here. For the first time, I was tempted to underline passages, but I feared I’d mark half the book, so I didn’t.

10/10 would drink a concoction to relive this book’s enchantment again.

First of all: this is a very bad book. The characters are bland, the fantasy names sound incredibly made up, the pace is super fast, it’s hard to be immersed, and the Christian layer leaves nothing to the imagination.

Second of all: I love this series. Yes, the book is horrible, but as a young child I loved it. This was one of my favourite series. It made the stuffy Old Testament feel alive and adventurous to me, and the stories unforgettable.

Would I recommend? Not for you, but definitely for your child.

Book still sucks tho.

Bekende sprookjes in een ander jasje, want het leven is geen sprookje. Soms grappig, soms verdrietig, altijd herkenbaar.

As an introductory read this book works fine. It references a lot of other works that provide more details.

However, there is a way larger focus on medication than I would have liked. The book basically starts and ends with it. Talking about euthanising fearful dogs on one of the first pages was a little intense as well. I feel like it would have been fitting to describe a few common triggers for fearful dogs and how to deal with them, most of the book felt like an introduction to a book about fearful dogs.

I also have a problem with the amount of parallels that are drawn between raising a kid and training a dog. Definitely not the same.

Also stop hating on my boy Cesar Millan :(
