The God and the Gumiho by Sophie Kim
4.0
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
The God and the Gumiho is one of those stories that you never want to end. From the murder-mystery vibes to an amazing enemies to lovers, I did not want to put this book down (and actually groaned in disappointment when I finished it).
I could literally see this story playing out as a Kdrama with Song Kang as Seokga while I read. If you love romantasy with a splash of mystery, this is 100% the book for you.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this book!
This book brought all the ache and nostalgia as a summer camp person myself that graduated from camper to staff member. This year is actually the first year I won’t be going (life, you know?) and this book made miss it so much. God, I wish I could go.
I suppose I should talk about the romance instead of reflecting on my own sadness about missing camp. Juliette and Priya are the absolute cutest ever! I really appreciate that the miscommunication trope is not the conflict in the story. I HATE the miscommunication trope. This book was just an all around great read!

To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods by Molly X. Chang

Thank you to NetGalley for letting me read this ARC!
This book was beautifully written. I could vividly see the world of Pangu in my head and the culture is fascinating. The plot of this book is very interesting too. A fantasy world based off of Chinese lore that’s been invaded by humans from Earth? That immediately drew me in!
However, I couldn’t enjoy the story as much as I wanted to because I couldn’t stand the romance. Antony was never even slightly redeemed enough in my eyes that Ruying could fall for him. He was always horrible and making her do horrible things. She’s smart and cunning, it’s how she’s supposed to have stayed alive, so you can’t tell me that Antony said a few pretty things to her and she suddenly forgot he was an evil colonizer responsible for the destruction of her people. I’m glad that at the end Ruying finally sees him for who he has been the entire time but it was just real hard to read her having lovey dovey moments with him.
UPDATE: So I’ve found out through Twitter/X that Rome was based off of Unit 731, which has committed some of the most egregious war crimes in human history, and that had made my viewing of this book even harsher. I rounded up to 3 stars before because I think I can see the author pivoting the romance and Ruying’s alliance (which in the beginning she condemns her friend unequivocally for being allied with Rome, and then does so herself? But I digress) in the next book(s) but the fact that this book not only contains a colonizer romance but a colonizer romance with characters based off a Chinese woman and a Unit 731 solider? Not even a mere solider but one of the like lieutenants or something? I just don’t understand it. I wanted this book to be really good but all of this is just leaving such a bad taste in my mouth.

Firstly, thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
Wow. I really, really enjoyed this book. Ying is an incredible main character and I loved being inside her head. She’s so strong and I lived reading her wrestle with her morality and her ambition.
The world itself is so cool. I really like the steampunk-fantasy setting and all of the political intricacies were so interesting to read.
All in all, this is probably one of my favorite reads of this year so far! It looks like this will be the first in a series, I can’t wait to see where else this world may go!

The Crimson Crown by Heather Walter

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this book!
One thing about me is I love a fairy tale re-telling. Couple that with witches and sapphics? The Crimson Crown had to have been written just for me.
I loved every second of this book. It’s one of those reads I’d give anything to read again for the first time. Ayleth’s decent from an insecure girl just trying to do what she thinks is best for her coven to The Evil Queen was artfully done.
If you love Marissa Meyer’s Heartless then you will adore The Crimson Crown!

I did enjoy this book but I took half a star off because I wish there was a little more murder and a little less smut. Definitely a personal opinion from someone who doesn’t read romance a lot, or seek out “spicy” books, but hey, this is an app to say your personal opinions so yeah
