I really wish I could rate this 5 stars because this book has some of the most beautiful writing, imagery and poetry I’ve encountered in a while. The plot, especially in the last 60 pages is where it lost me a little. And I can accept that it’s weird and definitely very contemporary (in a good way!) but it was just a little much towards the end. And maybe it’s supposed to feel overwhelming but I wish there would’ve been more of a tying-together-feeling. Nevertheless I absolutely loved this. The themes of girlhood, friendship, religion, motherhood etc really resonated with me and really moved me as well. Imagine those 4 stars as a fat 4 3/4 stars! also: need Sofia Coppola on this STAT

finished this last night and absolutely loved it so much. not sure if it was intentional or not but I found it to be extremely interesting commentary on the american entertainment industry and the completely hypocritical beauty standards of the 50s and 60s, a lot of which still exist today. to put it in tiktok buzz words: soo lana der rey vinyl americana old hollywood glamour unhinged mentally ill girlies slayy

the perfect book.
I wish I was smart enough to say more about this book but it’s just such a masterpiece and I don’t think there’s anything for me to add to that

A hopeless story without heroes or villains, without cause and effect. and yet it manages to be a beautifully tragic retelling of the pain and nihilism of adolescence. I felt that only when I stopped craving answers and explanations and gave up on trying to understand I started to actually grasp this book. I think as readers we are supposed to understand as little about “the sense” behind things as the boys understand about the Lisbon sisters. When we think we might be getting close to a big revelation it slips right through or fingers.

“They became too powerful to live among us, too self-concerned, too visionary, too blind. What lingered after them was not life, which always overcomes natural death, but the most trivial list of mundane facts: a clock ticking on a wall, a room dim at noon, and the outrageousness of a human being thinking only of herself.”
