Gregor and the Marks of Secret by Suzanne Collins

this one was truly harrowing. even when the situation is dark and devastating, suzanne collins never fails to be honest and real with her readers. it’s heartbreaking.
i obviously didn’t have the same understanding of our world that i do now when i first read these, and i loved them and took them seriously as a kid but… wow. reading them now as an adult, it’s no wonder that i never forgot these books

thinking about book bans and all the people these days who seem to think children should be shielded from the real world in books… and meanwhile suzanne collins was writing about war and racism and loss in a children’s fantasy series. and it WORKS. these books are really standing the test of time for me

actually absurd amounts of racism and sexism for a children’s fantasy book, not to mention a VERY dark ending to what was otherwise a whimsical, sweet, and funny series.
you know i love a serious, high-stakes conflict, but this was…. wow. and justice for susan???? omg. why does c.s. lewis hate women once they grow up
