I was so nervous to actually read this book, i've seen it hyped up so much, and I was not disappointed, mostly. I really loved the characters and how complex they were. I also really loved the magic even though I feel like it wasnt explained super well, and on that note, I didn't like how it glossed over Tisaanahs time growing up and teaching herself magic. I feel like it also got kind of boring around the 60% mark but it did pick back up around 70%.

This book ended up being way sadder than I anticipated, and it was also a bit more spicy. I loved the writing style. It felt kind of like a fanfic at time, maybe because it reminded me a lot of the Teen Wolf show. It really sucked me in. Can’t wait to read the next book.

Honestly this was a lot like From Blood and Ash/Flesh and Fire by JLA and Wolf God by Veronica Douglas so if you like those you will also probably like this book. Some the characters decisions had me a bit confused (I will list below so they’re not spoiled) and the only answer I can come up with as to why they did what they did is because plot 😅. With only about 250 pages and 20% of that smut there wasn’t a whole lot of world building that wasn’t explicitly used to move the plot forward. Overall a good read, will give book 2 a shot.

If the queen knew that Adara was the “chosen one” since birth, why did it take a month to get everything ready? With how the Queen acts you would have thought they would get married as soon as she got to the palace.

Also, why did the Queen allow Evren to take Adara when she knew what was going on between them? With how overbearing and possessive her and Gavril have been towards her, and especially with what happened moments before they had to leave, how did they think that was a good idea.

I got a Chronicles of Narnia vibe in the beginning with the 1930/40s England feeling, the train station, the war and the wardrobe. That did die off though as the story progressed. The mystery is what really kept me engaged in the story, I had so many theories, some that were totally wrong and some I think I’ll find out in book 2. I love when books make me think and theorize. I can’t wait till Ruthless Vows comes out.
