This 2nd book didn’t disappoint! Picks up right where book 1 left off and the story had me hooked right from the beginning. There’s not much else I feel like I can say about this book without giving spoilers but it’s a definite read just be cautious because this book does contain explicit content and dark elements.

Before I say anything else I think it needs to be known that this series of 3 books (soon 4) is definitely meant to be read as a series, the main romance is a super slow burn. That being said, the journey through these books is amazing, there’s way more to it than spice. The story is so well written and there is so much going on that your emotions fly everywhere. I cannot recommend this series enough but please be aware that it contains explicit content and can get very dark.

The writing style of this author is beautiful, the way they describe everything is amazing. I’m not sure If this will make any sense but this story felt very Percy Jackson-esque. Two things I didn’t like about this book were 1) the middle was a little too slow paced for me and 2) the ending was pretty predictable. One thing I was not expecting was for the story to get so sad so fast in the beginning but it really set the mood for the book and fit perfectly. The story is like your run of the mill fantasy with an epic quest but takes place in a culture with mythology that I have not read a lot about so it made the reading experience unique snd interesting.

Before reading this review just know I have not yet read The Wicked Deep and I have to say I kind of hate how that book is plastered all over this book (the dust jacket and the front and back pages inside). That being said I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would. The mystery part of the book was slowly paced but it fit the book well and wasn’t boring at all, the tension just kept mounting and it always kept me guessing. The story also had a wonderfully dark ominous feel to it that I really enjoyed. I also loved how the author wrote about the witchcraft/magic, it felt organic. Probably a weird thing to say but I really would love to see this made into a movie. I definitely recommend this book if you want something dark and mysterious.

Putting aside the whole mystery author part of this book, this book was not that good. The writing was clunky and repeated itself sometimes. I did not like the main character, there’s a fine line between badass and asshole and they crossed that line too many times. The romance between Riven and Keera seemed forced. It also felt like the characters lacked depth, even though the MC had so much happen to them. This book also feels like a lot of the other spicy fantasy books out there, but honestly what stops me from ever rereading this book is the bad writing. Saunter was how they described someone walking 7 times, 2 of these less than 2 paragraphs apart. Here are some other examples of bad writing that stuck out too much to ignore.
“Straight lanes that led to the city palace were intersected by curving alleys. It was easy to notice at the edge of city with so few people walking along the streets. Most of the houses sat empty,”
“I pulled out the cork of a wine bottle from the night before. I used my teeth, spitting it onto the floor of the coach”
If this is ever on kindle unlimited I’d say go ahead and read it but I wouldn’t spend money on this book.
