oh i was severely disappointed by this book. i was expecting a memoir that dived into life as a lesbian in the 60s but instead it was just 270 pages of her talking about getting drunk and fucking people. plus lots of racism and fat phobia which were off putting.

a classic for a reason!
honestly? it’s a good book. was it the best book i’ve ever read? no. but like it was good. i enjoyed the writing style, it’s pretty flowery and lyrical which definitely fits the tone all though i will say some sentences could’ve really used some commas. i enjoyed how the book explored class differences and morality.
also not to sound mentally ill but gatspy has bug bojack horseman energy, especially the “everybody loves you but nobody likes you” scene. like i don’t like him but i do feel bad for him.

unlike many other academic books davis clearly communicates her ideas in a way that is engaging and easy to understand. the writing helps drive the book and it’s messages forward. i would have enjoyed ch6 to be a bit longer to explore what prison abolition could really look like. essential reading!

while it took me a while to finish, i found this book quite compelling. i enjoyed the abstract nature of the plot and although i’m left with more questions at the end of the book than the beginning, it contained satisfying themes that a century later still ring true.

a very engaging read! i was invested  in the plot and the characters. i felt emira could’ve been fleshed out more honestly but i loved her. the ending was a bit rushed and i would’ve liked to explore alix’s motivations and emira’s response a bit more.
