This book is very much not for everyone - check content warnings. It’s not sexy, it’s not even especially romantic. It’s melodramatic, it’s excruciating, the characters are tortured. It’s classic Balogh, and I happened to think it was great.

The relief and delight I felt upon realizing this is not about an actual duke!! Nice change of pace from most historical romance.

I had some issues with the consistency of the characters’ behaviors, but ultimately this was a great HR romp.

Really enjoyed this! It has a great balance of slightly wacky HR plot points and more normal slice-of-life moments. I appreciated the (anachronistic) frankness with which marriage as a business arrangement was discussed, and I liked the main characters as well as the cast of side characters.

I do have a few critiques. I would have liked to see more development in the MCs' relationship over time; it felt like their feelings went from 0 to 100 overnight, and the ending was similarly abrupt. Max felt like an underutilized character, but I guess we'll see him more in future books.

This is a rare case where I think an epilogue could have added a lot -- maybe a snapshot of
their return to England?
I am very curious to know more practical details about the ending, in particular:
Will August still be involved in her family business after marriage? What does her relationship with her parents look like after marriage?
I hope we see more of this couple in the rest of the series, to find out.

Kit and Emma were both such cool characters (especially Emma!!), I just wanted more from this story. Novella format is hard for me.

DID NOT FINISH

This book was really not for me. The characters felt juvenile, the plot was over the top, and the constant references to tropes, booktok, etc. were exhausting. Plus, it's hard to read a book that's set where you live, but doesn't reflect the reality of the place.
