The book did not turn out at all like I expected. The twists and turns led to the unfolding of many events I did not foresee, which made the story more enjoyable.
I cared about the main characters and wanted to see them all survive the onslaught of struggles they faced and have a happy ending.
The detail in the description of the misery that flooded the streets of Belfast immersed me into the story. I felt like I was walking through the streets myself, seeing and smelling the rot and muck that made up the atmosphere of the book.

The story picks up a great deal in volume 2, leaving you in near constant suspense of what poor Emily, the protagonist, will suffer next.

My favorite book when I was a kid. Opened my eyes to the horrors of racism at a young age.
