Eh. <--- This is how I feel about this book. Eh.

I like the concept and according to what research I did several secondary characters are actual historical figures. Which was neat.

However, I was expecting something very different from what I got. To be fair, I don't even know what I was expecting but it wasn't....that.

Okay. I find it really hard to be sympathetic to any of the characters, except perhaps Alys. Probably because for the majority of the book Nus-Nus was the main POV character and he just annoyed me. I might have liked him if the author had portrayed him in any other way but she didn't.

Johnson's writing could use some work. A lot of work. Her writing felt rushed and I couldn't always make sense of where I was in the timeline of things. Nus-Nus would talk of things that had happened months or even years before switching to the present day and the flow of it all didn't work well.

So yeah. Two stars. I'd give it one but I'm not that mean and I think the concept is great. But the overall plot and writing could have been much, much better.

So it took me a little bit to get into this book, I admit it. But a friend lent it to me and I am glad I listened to her. Once I got past the 120 mark I was hooked. It was a little predictable, especially with the not-so-subtle hints the narrator was giving in the build-up. Still, without giving anything away, I can see why this was on Oprah's book club list.

5 Stars.

I love fairy tales, no matter the origin, so of course I am going to love this book. The illustrations are pleasant, as well, and its interesting to see the similarities between tales with other cultures. Its a very pretty book.

5 Stars - Amazing!

I'll write a longer review later but I will say that I was not expecting.....this. A guest at the inn I work at suggested I read this after talking for a good hour or so. She said she had read it many, many times, and that I would appreciate the novel and it's lessons.

How right she was. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in human nature.
