Small World

Laura Zigman

DID NOT FINISH

Too twee. I want to like Laura Zigman but just… don’t.

I found this tedious and overwrought. Truly do not understand the hype on this one.

What a gorgeous, carefully constructed story. Ann Patchett can do no wrong.

Enjoyable-enough romance, though the political plot was laughably bad.

Fascinating novel about a young woman who semi-accidentally builds her career in marketing for oil and gas companies, and all the tiny compromises she makes along the way. I found it a little slow going in the beginning, re her childhood in  Azerbaijan and other spots her diplomat dad was posted, but it really picks up when she hits adulthood. Is it depressing as hell? Also yes.

At least 75 pages too long, and I hate the way Henry’s characters are absolutely unable to communicate about their feelings. Definitely got tiresome, and the Maine kitsch was overdone.

Heady, interior novel about new motherhood, raising a family, money and more. Very little plot to speak of, and a bit too much abstract thinking for my taste, but compelling nonetheless.

Taut, closely observed and extremely compelling.

Really loved the second half of this novel, but the first half was such a slog — way too much detail about the SNL-like show the narrator writes for. Kind of with it to get to the second part? But would haven been better without it.

Evocative and real, but boy does the plot kick into overdrive 90% of the way through.
