I absolutely loved this concept! If you love The Great British Bake Off and cozy mysteries, then this is a great read for you!

The writing and storytelling was excellent. I normally don’t get hooked right away but fairly quickly into this I felt connected to the characters and the competition. The contestants are complex and their backstories really made the story move. The pacing of the story was perfect.

For me the ending fell apart and I was honestly a bit bummed with it. It kinda jumped around a bit too much and then suddenly it flashed forward and quickly resolved everything.

Overall I really enjoyed this and would recommend it!

I really enjoyed this one! After reading some heavy and tense books this was a great break. It’s funny, captivating, and creative. The whole concept of SCYTHE is interesting and I’m hoping there’s a sequel to see where things end up! A great ready for spooky season when you’re tired of the thrillers and darkness but still want something in the Halloween theme.

4.5-5/5⭐️ Gonna come right out and say it: Ruth is a little too into Twilight and the amount of times this book referenced Twilight was unexpected. It makes sense after finishing the book, but some of the references did make me cackle, which was definitely not the point but kinda made me enjoy it more weirdly enough?

Trigger warning (there is a list on the first page of the book btw!): if you have any type of religious trauma this may not be the book for you.

Truthfully, this book was a 3-4/5 for me until I got to the last 50-100 pages. It was able to hold my attention for the most part, but those last 10-15 chapters had me hooked. Everything coming together had me on the edge of my seat and unable to put the book down. This is definitely more of a mystery with maybe a slight dusting of thriller rather than an outright thriller, but I requested this from the library about a month or so ago so I completely forgot what the description said and went in blind (way more fun that way) so it wasn’t a problem for me.

I will typically shy away from books with below 3.5⭐️ but I’m so glad I gave this one a chance. I can see how this would not be for everyone but overall I would recommend!
