It's probably mostly down to the type of character he is (both his training in the book and the kind of video game character he is) but it seemed like the quality of the book dropped some when the focus was on Master Chief because of how he thought/was trained to think, and I'm left feeling like the quality could have been more consistent if his character or the way his character was treated by his trainers was handled differently.
