Fun but horribly preachy and ends with a disclaimer that seemed to be there only to make it less so.
I cannot believe I used to think this and the Twisted Ones were great horror. But hey they are at least a decent intro to the genre. Still interested in the ways those books mirror each other tho
Like with most thrillers, this started strong. There was intrigue, the idea that something would happen and even better, that something had already happened. But quickly it devolved into a standard family drama.
When the novel remembered it was a thriller it went from boring to annoying. The characters became charactitures of who they were before. While the motives made sense and they (with the notable exception of Lisa's) were properly and throughly hinted at, as soon as they were revealed the characters stopped acting with any sense. It felt as though nearly at the end of the book, the author remembered they were trying to write a thriller and turned the dial from 25 to 100. It led to an ultimately disjointed feel.
And then there's the weird MRA and family values vibes in the book. No the wife wasn't being abused, she was trying to get knocked up so her husband wouldn't leave her. No it's actually better that the killer gets away with murdering her husband it because they can't leave her baby without both her parents, just ignore the fact that she killed that baby's dad. No the grown man that groomed a 17 y/o deserves to be in his son's life because ultimately the kid needs a dad. it's just gross!

Grooming and the ultimate defense of it
BOO!!
Beautifully written and intriguing but ultimately underdeveloped despite nearing 500 pages.
It's so incredibly preachy towards the end too. The themes and messages were so clear, the foundation perfect. I didn't need some characters we saw in legitimately one scene before to speak out the moral.
Also just always going to sideeye weird messaging about pregnancy and motherhood.
