I, admittedly, have not ever read the Handmaid's Tale. I have watched and loved the TV show in addition to having read and loved the graphic novel. Something about the book just keeps leading me to put in down in favor of something else.
I need not have this problem with the Testaments. I started it before class and finished before bed. It was not quite an enthralling read but one I couldn't put down nonetheless.
Of the three narratives, none was less interesting than another. There was insights into characters that a TV fan might have brushed aside while still remaining a distinct thing. There was worldbuilding insights that I've wanted answered since the beginning of the show. There were the careful ways the narratives wove together and with narratives past, be it those read or watched.
I think many might say that this is simply a cash grab. It is not, in my opinion. It was, instead, the hope to the despair that is everything incarnation of the Handmaid's Tale. More accurately, it is the hope that things can change punctured by moments of despair in contrast with the despair and acceptances punctured by moments of hope that are common to the Handmaid's Tale adaptations. It is, in many ways, what one would expect from a story told in this universe published in 2019 where hope in needed much more than a warning.
