I was very excited to win a copy of this book through "First Reads" -- it's my first win! When I requested this book, I read the description and thought that it looked like an interesting art book -- I love collecting art books of all kinds, and thought that this would be a cool book to have in my collection. The description of the book makes it seem like a collection of really unique photographs.
Unfortunately, when I received the book and looked in detail at the art inside, I was a bit disappointed. I first want to say that I have no problem with nude photography in general -- it can be a very beautiful and respectable form of art. Sadly, some of the photographs in this book are not as original and unique as the description would lead readers to believe. There are several very ordinary snapshots of women sitting on beds or in bathrooms that are reminiscent of something that one could potentially find on any amateur porn site.
Some of the photographs are stunning, however, and deserve to be mentioned. The most outstanding photographs in this book are the ones in which the artist uses different forms of light to illuminate his subjects. There are a few pictures in this book that depict the model being illuminated by nothing but a single candle (as in the picture on the cover of the book) or only from the light of a nearby window. One of the most interesting pictures shows a woman with a birthday cake -- the candles on the cake being the only source of light.
In general, though, I feel that the quality of the photographs could be improved, and this is why I give the book only three out of five stars.
