adventurous medium-paced

⭐⭐
I read Runemarks by Joanne Harris, and honestly, it left me feeling quite frustrated. It started off confusing and stayed that way until the end. It’s one of those books where you try to connect the dots, but the pieces of the puzzle just don’t fit together.

The progression of the story didn’t work for me either. Things felt dragged out or lacked a clear logic, and instead of getting hooked on the narrative, I just found myself flipping pages to get to the end.

For me, the biggest issue was the lack of impact. I couldn’t connect with the characters, I didn’t feel any emotion, and there was none of that spark that makes you think about a story long after you’ve closed the book. When I finished, it was more of a “meh” than a “wow.”

In summary, this book simply didn’t work for me. Perhaps others can appreciate its strengths, but it’s not a read I’d recommend with much enthusiasm.

mysterious fast-paced

Let me start by saying that Kill Joy was my first experience with Holly Jackson and the A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder universe. I haven’t read any of the main books in the series, but I decided to give this one a go because the premise sounded intriguing.

The idea of solving a fictional murder while you read is definitely creative. It feels a bit like being part of a board game or an escape room, but in book form. It’s interactive, challenging, and, in its own way, original. However, to be honest, I felt like the story itself lacked the impact I usually look for in a mystery novel. It’s not bad, but it didn’t grip me in the way I’d hoped.

Maybe the fact that it’s a companion book to the main series made me feel a bit “left out,” like I was peeking into a world I wasn’t fully familiar with yet. That said, it was still a fun, light read – perfect for when you’re in the mood for something different, as long as your expectations aren’t too high.

I’d give it 3 stars because I enjoyed the concept, but it wasn’t something that stuck with me. I imagine it might be a more engaging experience for those who’ve already read the main series.

Have you tried it? Do you think it’s worth diving into the main books?
