I ate this up. Such beautiful prose, loved the atmosphere and I’m a sucker for a slow descent into madness. Could have done without the dense descriptions of Dorian’s fleeting fascinations in chapter 11 but other than that I thought the pacing was perfect and I feel sorry for other books I read after this.

I am forever thinking about this book and am searching for more like it. The atmosphere of TSH is unflinchingly dark and brooding and the writing is in a league of its’ own. I never wanted it to end. I can’t wait to read more Donna Tartt.

I was completely enthralled by this story. Paul and Julian are not likable characters and yet I found myself charmed by them and not wanting to leave them. This book is the total embodiment of be gay do crime. It was everything I wanted it to be and I won’t soon forget it.

This Is How You Lose the Time War

Max Gladstone, Amal El-Mohtar

DNF at like, 30%. This book made me feel stupid. You’re thrown into a science fiction world completely foreign to you with no context. I couldn’t figure out what was going on between all the metaphors. Wish I could have enjoyed this. It just came off as pretentious.

Boy Parts

Ughhhh, another DNF. (28%) I’m at the point where I don’t care enough to finish a book I’m not enjoying just to see it through. Here we have an unreliable narrator, which usually I’m all about, who is also a narcissist and is a really shitty friend. There are no redeeming qualities. It’s just you and this narcissist’s innermost negative thoughts about literally everyone and everything they see around them. It’s exhausting. The MC is so gd holierthanthou and so gd boring. Not only that but the other characters suck too. OF COURSE this MC has an extremely loyal spineless best friend (who she treats poorly btw) who has a huge lesbian crush on her. Just unenjoyable and I’m excited to move on from this.

Okay, what the fuck? It took me a little over two weeks to finish reading this book, not because I didn’t like it but because it mostly made me uneasy. I didn’t always want to read it and feel that way. This story will definitely stick with me for better or for worse. The writing was remarkable, I was engrossed in it despite these strange characters. Not sure I could recommend this one to many folks but if someone wants something weird, deranged, and a bit gross then I’d check this out.

I enjoyed the dark academia vibe of this book a lot, that’s what drew me to it in the first place. Love evil characters. The writing is proficient but nothing really note worthy. Overall I liked it and will be reading the sequel when I get a chance. :-)
