Review of “The Unseen World”

How I read: 🎧
⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ - (Rating System Below)

“The Unseen World” by Liz Moore is a beautifully written, thought-provoking novel that defies its initial impression. While marketed as a tech-heavy exploration of AI and computer science, it’s really a heartfelt literary fiction story about Ada Sibelius, a young girl navigating the mysteries of her father’s past and her own identity. The book dives deep into themes of memory, family, and the complexities of growing up when you’re different, offering a poignant look at Ada’s journey from childhood to adulthood.

Although I went in expecting more of a science fiction angle, the emotional depth and character-driven narrative won me over. Ada’s relationship with her brilliant but enigmatic father, David, is tender and compelling, and her quest to piece together his hidden history is both riveting and heartbreaking. Moore’s writing is introspective and lyrical, making even the quieter moments resonate deeply, though readers looking for a tech-focused story might feel a bit misled by the marketing.

Ultimately, The Unseen World isn’t the book I expected, but it’s one I’m glad I read. It’s an excellent choice for fans of literary fiction and stories that explore the intricacies of family and identity. While not my usual genre, I’d wholeheartedly recommend it for anyone looking for an emotional, thoughtful read.

Review of “100 Fathoms Below”

How I read: 🎧
⭐⭐☆☆☆ - (Rating System Below)

”100 Fathoms Below” was definitely an experience, but not one I’d rush to repeat. The premise—a Cold War submarine mission turned supernatural horror—sounded intriguing, and my reading group had joked about it before we found it free on Audible. While it wasn’t a total waste of time, the story’s disjointed writing and uncomfortable prologue set a rocky tone that never fully recovered, even as the tension picked up aboard the USS Roanoke.

The middle portion of the audiobook had some gripping moments as the crew faced both external threats and internal chaos. The mix of Cold War intrigue and horror elements didn’t always mesh well, leaving parts of the story feeling forced or awkward. The narration was solid, but even a good performance couldn’t save the disjointed storytelling.

The ending was where things truly went off the rails. While I am glad I finished it for the joke of it all, the final scenes felt unnecessary and left me with an unpleasant aftertaste. I wouldn’t recommend this book unless you’re really curious or, like me, need to satisfy a long-running joke. It’s a short listen, but not one I’ll revisit or easily recommend to others.

Review of “A Sprinkle of Christmas Magic”

How I read: 🎧
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - (Rating System Below)

“A Sprinkle of Christmas Magic” by Laura Abbott is the perfect dose of holiday cheer wrapped in a sweet small-town romance. Skylar’s journey from big-city career ambitions to rediscovering the magic of her family bakery in Silver Creek Crossing was heartwarming, especially with Landon and his adorable daughter Emma stealing the show. Listening to the audiobook felt like being wrapped in a cozy blanket with all the holiday feels, and the chemistry between Skylar and Landon had me smiling the whole way through.

I was genuinely surprised this book doesn’t have a higher rating—it was such a delightful listen! The small-town charm, festive setting, and Emma’s endearing matchmaking antics made it so much more than just another holiday romance. Skylar’s struggle to balance her career dreams with the unexpected pull of family and love felt relatable and real, giving the story just the right amount of depth.

If you’re a fan of Hallmark Christmas movies, this book is basically that in audiobook form—sweet, quick, and guaranteed to warm your heart. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a light, feel-good story to get into the holiday spirit.

P.S. I ended up finding this AudioBook on YouTube through the Author’s Page.

Review of “The History of Lethbridge”

How I read: 📖
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - (Rating System Below)

“The History of Lethbridge” by Ryan Uytdewilligen is an engaging and approachable dive into how this southern Alberta city grew from a remote coal mine to a thriving hub of nearly 100,000 people. The book strikes a perfect balance, offering just enough depth to keep you invested while keeping the stories short and snappy, so nothing ever feels like it drags. It’s clear the author has a genuine love for his hometown, and it shines through every page.

What makes this book such a treat is how accessible it is. You don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy it—it’s written for anyone with a casual interest in Lethbridge or even just the Western Prairies. The mix of historic and modern photos adds so much charm, while the timelines and sidebars make it easy to follow along. It’s like a guided tour through the city’s evolution, filled with fascinating tidbits you won’t find in a typical travel guide.

Whether you’re a tourist, a proud local, or just someone curious about Canadian history, “The History of Lethbridge” is a fantastic read. It’s informative without being overwhelming, and it’s a great way to appreciate the city’s important role in shaping the Prairies. Definitely a book I’d recommend to anyone looking to learn more about this unique corner of Canada!

Still Just a Geek: An Annotated Collection of Musings by Wil Wheaton

Review of “Still Just a Geek”

How I read: 🎧
⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ - (Rating System Below)

“Still Just a Geek” is an honest, emotional rollercoaster that dives deep into the life of Wil Weaton, from the highs of Hollywood fame to the painful struggles behind the scenes. Revisiting his original book, “Just a Geek”, with updated insights and new material, Wil lets readers into his world with a mix of humor, raw vulnerability, and self-reflection. Whether he’s talking about his time as a young actor or his battles with depression, the honesty is refreshing and sometimes heart-wrenching. I did not read his first book, but I can tell you, this one stands solid on its own.

What really stuck with me was Wil’s openness about his childhood and how hard it was to be a kid actor without the support he needed. His parents, especially his father, were awful in ways that just make your heart hurt for him. It’s a prime example of why so many of us are now prioritizing mental health and refusing to carry forward the unhealthy patterns of previous generations. His reflections on these experiences are heavy, but they also make his story feel so relatable and human.

This book hits hard, but it’s also inspiring in how it highlights the power of self-awareness and growth. Wil isn’t just revisiting his past—he’s owning it, flaws and all, and showing how he’s worked to move forward. It’s a reminder that even when things feel impossible, healing is possible. If you’re a fan of his work or just love a memoir that doesn’t shy away from the tough stuff, “Still Just a Geek” is well worth the read.

Dinner for Vampires: Life on a Cult TV Show by Bethany Joy Lenz

Review of “Dinner for Vampires: Life on a Cult TV Show”

How I read: 📖

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐(Rating System Below)

“Dinner for Vampires” is an absolutely gripping memoir that takes you deep into Bethany Joy Lenz’s decade-long experience in a cult, exposing the twisted manipulation and control that can exist under the guise of faith. It’s shocking how people can prey on someone’s beliefs, not even to make money, but to carelessly take and waste it because it was never theirs to begin with. Lenz tells her story with raw honesty and just enough dark humor to keep the heaviness from becoming overwhelming.

I went into this knowing little about Lenz—having never watched One Tree Hill—but that didn’t matter. Her journey of finding herself amidst such intense control and fear is universal and hits hard. Some parts were so heavy I had to take breaks before diving back in, but that only speaks to how deeply her words resonate. Her resilience and courage shine through every page, making her story not just one of survival but also one of rediscovery and hope.

“Dinner for Vampires” is a book that sticks with you long after you’ve finished, leaving you stunned at the depths of human manipulation, but also inspired by the strength it takes to reclaim your identity. If you’re looking for something raw, powerful, and unforgettable, this is it.

⭐⭐⭐ (Rating System Below)

”Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Harvest” is a fun, nostalgic read that brings the early episodes of the show to life, though it sticks pretty closely to the original story without adding much depth or internal monologue from the characters; still, if you’re a Buffy fan, it’s an enjoyable novelization worth checking out, and I’m excited to dive into more of the series.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Rating System Below)

”Blue Book Volume 2: 1947” is an absolute gem for anyone fascinated by UFOs and the unexplained. The art style is stunning, with Michael Avon Oeming’s illustrations capturing the eerie, surreal vibe of the 1947 Kenneth Arnold sightings perfectly. Every page pulls you deeper into the mystery, and the visuals alone are worth the read.

What really made this volume stand out for me were the fascinating snippets of Project Blue Book history. Seamlessly weaves in real accounts and the government’s responses to UFO sightings back in the day, adding a layer of authenticity and intrigue to the already captivating storyline. It’s a wild ride that’s as informative as it is thrilling.

If you’re the kind of person who’s always wondered about extraterrestrial life or loves a good non-fiction paranormal read, this comic series is a no-brainer. The combination of true stories, historical context, and incredible art makes “Blue Book Volume 2” an absolute must-read for believers and skeptics alike.

How I read: 📖

Disclaimer: Please note that I received a Physical ARC from Penguin Random House Canada, in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Rating System Below)

”Blood Over Bright Haven” completely blew me away with its intense, action-packed start and never let up. The world M. L. Wang has crafted is rich, dark, and full of layers that kept me hooked from page one, as we dive into the cutthroat world of magic, academia, and power. Watching Sciona fight tooth and nail to be taken seriously as a highmage—and then get slapped in the face by relentless sexism, like when she’s condescendingly called “Miss” instead of her rightful title—was both infuriating and incredibly gripping.

What really made this story stand out was how it tackled the idea of blind faith in authority and the chilling lengths people will go to maintain their grip on power. The narrative expertly weaves in social and philosophical themes without ever feeling heavy-handed, and Sciona’s strained partnership with Thomil added an extra layer of intrigue and emotional complexity. I mean, the tension between these two was palpable, and watching their dynamic evolve as they unearth dangerous secrets was thrilling.

Honestly, I didn’t want this book to end. The world-building was phenomenal, and it had that perfect blend of fantasy and dark academia vibes. If you’re looking for a well-developed, thought-provoking fantasy with high stakes, compelling characters, and a hauntingly beautiful setting, “Blood Over Bright Haven” is an absolute must-read.

Review of “The Best Man’s Ghostwriter”

How I read: 🎧

⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (Rating System Below)

“The Best Man’s Ghostwriter” is a fun, quick listen that takes a humorous look at weddings and the chaotic friendships behind them. Nate, the professional ghostwriter for best men’s speeches, faces a particularly big challenge with Dan, a clueless best man in way over his head. The banter between characters, especially with Glen Powell and Nicholas Braun voicing Nate and Dan, keeps things lively, and there are definitely laugh-out-loud moments.

The story moves fast, almost too fast at times, which works for a light listen but sometimes left me wanting more depth. Nate’s own journey in exploring his friendships and impending wedding felt relatable, but didn’t quite keep my attention consistently. While the celebrity voice cast adds a great touch, the plot could have used a few more layers to really pull me in.

Overall, I’d recommend this if you’re looking for an easy, amusing listen with a charming cast, but if you’re after a story with real emotional depth, this one might fall a bit short.
