Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

To be honest, this is not a revolutionary book, but I still loved it. The characters are kind of stereotypical and flat and sometimes I felt like the book lacked substance. I wanted to know more of Leigh. She seemed too surface-level. I wanted to feel how vastly different the characters were when I switched POVs. I wanted them to be more deep (again, stereotypical).
But did I enjoy reading it? Yes, I loved it.
The ending was kind of unsatisfactory, I wanted to see more of Will getting out of the whole mess. Apart from being secluded, I felt like he was left too unscathed. I was left wanting to see more of Hamza and Miko. Like, how were they after the whole situation? Also, what happened to the Florida Ladies (apart from going on the down low)? I felt like there needed to be a scene (or scenes) where Will spoke to the rest of the characters or found out what happened to the rest of them. AND HIS MOM. SHE WAS SO WORRIED. Like, so many unanswered questions.
But, despite the flaws, I enjoyed it. You can tell the author used to do comics from the writing. Nice to get out of a reading slump.
This book captivated me from the first sentence. I hadn’t read for fun in so long (like 3 years?) and this book brought me out of my reading slump. It’s short, at least for me (>200 pages), so it was perfect.
It’s beautifully written.
I love me some existential ramblings. Yozo is (maybe) relatable if you’ve ever felt out of place and/or have had depression, which makes you feel bad since he’s basically a piece of shit and treats everyone around him horribly. He calls you out, making you uncomfortable, but that’s just what I love. But DON’T read this book if you’re currently depressed. This book would’ve sent me spiraling down a hole five years ago. It’s definitely not for everyone, it’s harsh and heavy. It’s not something I usually read, but I couldn’t put it down.
Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable
Graphic: Suicide attempt, Abandonment, Rape, Addiction, Alcoholism, Alcohol, Drug abuse, Sexual violence, Drug use, Mental illness, Sexual assault, Misogyny, Suicidal thoughts, and Suicide
Moderate: Body shaming and Death of parent
Minor: Vomit, Child abuse, Injury/Injury detail, Blood, Medical content, and Pedophilia
Some of the minor trigger warnings are listed as “minor” as they’re only mentioned in passing and are not major plot points of the book.
found it boring and slow. john green’s writing is beautiful and I felt like it captivated me at first but then it just… wasn’t good. it couldn’t seem to hold my attention at all. and i tried twice.
Lighthearted while also having its intense moments. I haven’t read many manga but I really enjoyed it. You can see how Shinichi is starting to develop as he learns more about himself and his weird co-dependent relationship with Migi. Wouldn’t recommend if you’re easily uncomfortable with body horror and gore.
