I would *LOVE* to give this a higher rating, because the core story is great and it ticked all of my boxes in so many ways. I was even ready to just accept the casual fatphobia as something I'm just always going to encounter all of the time. But I just can't get past how autism and the autistic character was treated in this book. I came so close to dnf-ing so many times because it was so bad. Please, authors, I'm begging you to run your books past Actually Autistic people and don't just, idk, go from a description on Autism Speaks. I have no idea if that's what this author did, but that's absolutely what it felt like. I'm actually genuinely mad about this because I wanted to be excited about how the book ended. I wanted to be excited about everything in this book! It could have been so good and it would be so incredibly easy to fix.
So, maybe in a future printing I'll be able to love this book as much as I wish I could. But for now, I'm just sad and disappointed.
