This book is the perfect book club book:
1) I finished it in 2 days--it's a page turner!
2) It's well-written--reminds me of "To Kill a Mockingbird"--something about the writer's voice, not to mention the themes of the positives/negatives of living in the south, although this takes place more recently.
3) It features strong female lead characters while there is also a "molesty"/"rapey" vibe in the background. From page 2, I was like, "gee, how long before one of these characters gets assaulted. What is it with book club books? I've been in two book clubs, and it seems like someone gets accosted in every other book we read!
4) It has a happy ending.

Just when I thought the whole sexy vampire thing was completely played out, I got hooked on "True Blood" and just had to read the books the series was based on! Season 1 follows this book pretty closely, with only a few minor changes, which I am sure I would've found really annoying if I had read the book first. I expected the book to be better than the show--books always are!--and I was not disappointed, and I was delighted to discover that it was even sexier. The juxtaposition of a tiny, sleepy backwoods Louisiana town with dark creatures of the fantasy realm, mystery, adventure, and romance is the perfect escape.
