This book is funny and charming at times and the narrator puts on a good performance,
however the plot is not very interesting and I never got attached to the characters. I finished it, but I don't think I'll be reading the sequel.

Such a fun and wild ride! The city of Bezim feels fully fleshed out and lived in, and the characters all have a depth to them that I crave in the books I read. Every time I pick up this book I am presented with a story of adventure, humour, political shenanigans, and a sick-ass magic system. Running over rooftops, complicated card games, and bittersweet romance can also be found within these pages.
I will be recommending this book to anyone looking for a fantastic fantasy adventure novel!

Wonderful. This book had me cry both sad and happy tears, and also made me laugh out loud.
Every single relationship in this book feels so real and each one moves the reader in a unique way.

I'm glad this book was short, not sure I would have finished it otherwise. Felt very over-dramatic.
I do think the lore of the fates and the Valor family are interesting and the way their stories kind of get repeated or revamped is fun.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 79%.
Maybe I will finish this one day, but I had it for three weeks and when I had to return it I didn't bother to put it on hold again. I found some parts to be very confusing and others to be very slow. Just not what I was looking for.
Things were starting to pick up and all come together but, again, not enough for me to finish it when I have other books that I am enjoying much more.

I felt like many of the plot points and revelations were supposed to be shocking and dramatic, and they just fell flat. There was such potential for this book to be thrilling, exciting, and shocking, but it was a little boring. Several events that I think were shocking (or at least could have been) were downplayed or brushed off, and I wish the author had done more with that material.
I also found some of the character voices very annoying, which totally took me out of the story because I just wanted them to stop talking.
It was interesting enough that I finished it, but only because I can listen to the audio while working.. If I picked this up as a physical book I might have DNF'd.
At first the switch between first person and third person pov was jarring/annoying, but I got used to it quickly and decided it didn't factor towards a lower rating.

Absolutely loved it! I listened to the audiobook this time (read a physical copy of the first book) and the narrators did a phenomenal job.
Blake does a good job balancing the different POVs, and each character has a distinct voice that stands out. These characters just bounce off each other so well! Every combination of partnerships and collaboration brings an interesting new vibe to the story and gives the reader new insights into the charaters' minds.
There were definitely a few aspects that I found really funny (like
Reyna telling Callum that she's a God, or Tristan asking Nico to kill him
).
There are some amazing things that are done with the magic system and I think it might be one of my favourite magic systems of any media.
The short story afterward is a fun little extra too :)
