This is another favorite of mine from this term, the illustrations are fantastic, but my favorite aspect of the book is the message. It teaches children, and adults, the importance of turning off our devices and to simply enjoy the company of one another.

Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale by Mo Willems

In this story the father makes the fatal mistake of misplacing his daughters stuffed bunny. Throughout the story he struggles to understand what is making his daughter so upset since she is too young to speak. However, as soon as they arrive home, the mother notices what is wrong and then they venture back to the laundromat to find Knuffle Bunny.
I love the media used in this book, it appears that real photographs of New York are used in the background of each illustration, in addition to the funny cartoon characters.

Rudi's Pond by Eve Bunting

Rudi’s Pond is a book about two children, the narrator of the story and her best friend, a little boy named Rudi. Rudi is very sick, which is difficult for his best friend to understand and cope with. When Rudi dies the children in school build a pond to remember him by. The narrator is left to grieve while trying to comprehend her feelings and the world around her.
While this is a hard topic for some students to read and comprehend, and I hope none of my students ever have to go through this, it is necessary to include in the classroom, not only to reach out to students who have gone through this, but also for students to understand how to deal with loss and sadness. The book teaches the reader the importance of being there for one another, which is something everyone must learn to do.

Mama for Owen by Marion Dane Bauer

A Mama for Owen is a story about a baby Hippo named Owen who lost his mom during a Tsunami. Owen spends the duration of the story searching for his mom but instead meets a tortoise named Mzee who becomes Owen’s adoption mother.
This story is about friendship, adoption, and acceptance. I think A Mama for Owen is a great addition to my adversity text set because it reaches out to students who have lost a parent, and students going through the adoption/foster care process. It also teaches the importance of friendship and acceptance, Owen finds a mother figure in the tortoise named Mzee even though they are different species, and despite Mzee is a boy. The two put their differences aside and are there for one another, which is a valuable lesson for children to learn.

The poems are super fun and cute in the book, and the illustration doodles on the pages are hilarious.

Although we ended up not using this book much in class, I read through quite a few poems on my own. The book is a collection of poems about insects, and a majority of the poems are meant to be read aloud by two readers, which is a fun and cute idea! I think this is a great way to bring poetry in the classroom, and I believe students would really enjoy reading poems aloud with a friend during class time. I plan on using this book in my future classroom.
