One of the best writers of her generation. Loved this book, hated the main character. I enjoyed Eileen more, but this is still a terrific novel and a must read.

I can't wait to read more Moshfegh and see what she does next!

Was actually pretty disappointed with this one. Can definitely track Moshfegh's progression as a writer, but this novella doesn't have the same "feel" her later novels do. An interesting read for fans of Moshfegh, but I found it difficult to connect with the writing.

"His true Penelope was Flaubert."

Wow, what an amazing piece of art. Flaubert is the most precise writer I've ever had the pleasure of reading. He's clever, plain, funny, serious, passionate, distant, and intimate all at once. This novel will make your heart ache.

You can see how many great writers, writing very diverse prose, all come back to Flaubert as influence. The language is masterful and direct, while the story is tragic. I both love and hate Emma for her actions. If one is to learn anything from this novel, it's to not make the same mistake Emma makes; reading bad literature.

I knew this would be one of my all-time favourite novels 1/3 of the way in and it only got better.

Mixed feelings. The ending is perfect though.

Quiet and simple sentimentality. Less short stories and more like small slice-of-life vignettes. Rivals Sun Also Rises for my favourite Hemingway. You can see the beginning of a writer figuring out their craft and style and it's such a joy to read. Anybody interested in reading short stories or writing needs to have this collection on the bookshelf.

The Nick Adams stories stand out and his progression into becoming an adult while learning to deal with life and death is a journey worth exploration and study.

Highlight stories were: Up in Michigan, The End of Something, The Battler, A Very Short Story, Soldier's Home, and Big Two-Hearted River.
