Comparisons to Castaway or Apollo 13 do a disservice to this book. What sets The Martian apart from those stories is the humor. Yes, this book is funny, surprisingly funny. If it didn't have the humor to provide relief, this book would be an excruciating drag.
It's a white-knuckle tale for sure, but thank goodness the author has a sense of humor.
