Fairy tale retellings are my kryptonite and Naomi Novik's redefine the subgenre.

From the description alone, I thought I wouldn't enjoy this one as much as Uprooted, but I don't think I could actually choose a favorite between the two.

Pros:
-strong female protagonists with unique backgrounds, complex characterizations (shocker: they are flawed humans) and complete stories
-the distinct perspectives from minor characters sprinkled in, this was very enjoyable!
-the different "woods" concept and then the antagonist development
-the Jewish culture and the continuous theme of family
-THE. FLOW. Reading this book was effortless and captivating because it was beautifully interwoven

Cons:
-It ended. I really would have loved an epilogue! It's not that the story didn't have a conclusion, I just wasn't ready to let it go.

Favorite Quote: "But it was all the same choice, every time. The choice between the one death and all the little ones."

If you love books you can't put down, let me tell you, this one is super glue.

Thoroughly entertaining!

There's nothing groundbreaking about fake to real love stories, nor friends to lovers, and yet they still pull you in for that one moment of realization that changes everything.

This felt like a more mature tone than To All the Boys I've Loved Before - higher stakes family issues, a player/bad boy love interest rather than Peter Kavinsky's boy-next-door charm, and some heavy bullying.

Overall, this was a fun read with cute dialogue and a satisfying bonus chapter at the end.

Reminds me of:
"Never Have I Ever" TV series on Netflix by Mindy Kaling
Unlocked by Karen Kingsbury
Just Listen by Sarah Dessen

I connected with Kit, but I found her to be a bit immature. I looked past this in the midst of the tragedy she just faced

I. FREAKING. LOVED. DAVID. He might be my most favorite contemporary male protagonist voice to read EVER. This book made my favorites list for his chapters alone! Read this, if only to expand your perspective. It's THAT important.

A surprise twist & a slow build. From the first page to the last, I was all in.

"Wow. I loved that. That was so good!" - My exact thoughts when I finished this book.
Holly Black always takes me by surprise. This was a wholly satisfying book. Loved the characters, loved the story, loved the ending.

Hazel is everything that I want in a female protagonist. Brave, flawed, noble, still growing into herself.

This book was melodic, enthralling, and complete. I am still under its enchantment.
