I want to hate this book. I want to hate this book so, so bad.
It was supposed to be another fluffy, summer novel. It was supposed to be another neutral, 2.5-star, "wow, not life changing, but everything wrapped up nicely" read. But, NO!
I can't stand Halle. She is a coward. She is dishonest. She uses her anxiety and grief as excuses to hide from reality and to hurt the people around her. But what I hate most about Halle is how much I am like her.
So, why the 4 stars? Because this book was so INTERESTING! There were so many layers. There was so much to love (and hate) about these characters. I already shared my biggest problem with the book. Here is what I liked:
-Halle & Ollie's sibling relationship
-Grams & Gramps (I mean....GOALS!!!)
-YA internet culture, BookCon, all the things!
-Jewish culture
-how the internet culture, pen name, mental health themes all had merit, but reality took the (cup)cake.
I think an author succeeds when a book is memorable. I think an author has created art when a book takes you away. I think an author has produced magic when a character becomes part of you.
The best fictional characters are not just genuine or complex, flawed or relatable. The best fictional characters are forgivable.

A quick and enjoyable read with a lot of good, including:
-all the classic novel references especially all the Jane Austen & Shakespeare- BIG FAN
-the big family dynamic
-friend group development kept things interesting
-Alex was a fun love interest, but didn't take up the whole book, which is appreciated
-sophisticated and poetic syntax
I liked this book, nothing too much to complain about, but I also felt a little too neutral on everything to warrant a 5 star recommendation.
