Edit: review and rating removed. I am not comfortable engaging with the work of an author who perpetuates the “both sides” narrative in the face of genocide.
I loved this duology but I just can’t get on board with the ending. The way V.E. Schwab chose to end it just didn’t make sense to me. In my opinion, when you write that kind of plot twist it should serve an equally significant purpose. But it didn’t really seem to have any significant ramifications or impact on the story itself, the character’s development, or the other characters’ development. And as such it came across to me as unnecessary. I honestly can’t figure out why V.E. Schwab decided to write it like that.
I don’t even know how to begin to unpack this book. It is so raw and real and unflinchingly honest. The amount of depth Mary H.K. Choi is somehow able to fit into Jayne’s character, into Jayne’s life, is astounding. The way this novel explores the complex and ever intersecting identities Jayne holds (woman, Korean American, low income, disordered eating, etc.) felt more honest than maybe anything I’ve ever read. I have no idea how Mary H.K. Choi did it. This book has left my head spinning and I know it is going to stay with me for a very long time.
