This is my favorite book of the series so far (not that I found it perfect) - hopefully I’ll write a more detailed review soon. Almost read it in a single sitting.

The 3 stars are for Penelope and Lady Danbury (who were quite the unexpected duo), because Colin was just so irritating… Least favorite book of the series so far.

Captivating take on ambition, capitalism and terrible working conditions in 1860’s Paris. Although the descriptions felt redundant at times, Zola’s characterization and particular attention to detail in this novel truly is outstanding.

It was really hard for me not to put it down before page ~200.

Overall the plot felt redundant and similar to other novels of the genre, but I enjoyed reading it.
