The Secret

DID NOT FINISH

Was just very repetitive and talked about a topic I already knew. Perhaps it would've been insightful for someone who was new but I was already practicing so there was no actionable advice.

As soon as the main character stuttered, I was done.

Originally, picking up this book, I thought it was going to be teaching me how to deal with childhood adversity and address them. As a young adult, I felt it was necessary because I know I've been carrying around lots of trauma with me. So about halfway through, I realized I wasn't going to be getting what I was looking for. But instead, I got something that was equally as good. Harris's research was based on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) I knew that this was right up my alley and something that I wanted to learn more about; especially because I have been thinking about going into medicine. However, about 75% through, it got pretty repetitive so I put the book down for a couple of days, and then I picked it back up a couple of days later because I just wanted to know more about it. 5-star reviews are rare for me. This was very well deserving of 5 stars.

Compared to Shadow & Bone, this wasn't as good. But comparing it as a standalone, it isn't my favorite either. for me, it felt predictable and at points where things are supposed to be tense, I didn't really feel the tension either.

A game within a game? Or is it a riddle within a riddle? Or perhaps, riddles within a game?

Jameson was quite possible of my favorite characters in the book. He's so angsty, moody, obnoxious, and equally funny. He's so carefree that he makes everything about the story less tense. Each character has so much depth and potential in future series. Every time I think I know what is going to happen next, I am proven wrong time and it is so captivating to read. Reading a few chapters every day isn't going to cut it. You have to sit down and read it from cover to cover and *immerse* yourself in the experience of this. I've never read anything like this before. There was so much planning and plot twists involved in making this story. The story told from the perspective of Avery Grambs made the experience more alive. Reading it from Avery's perspective felt as if I was in the Hawthorne Universe.
Ironically, I didn't expect an enemies to lovers trope.
but when I saw the absolute chemistry between Jameson and Avery, I knew I wanted them to be together. I also caught a parallel between both Grayson and Jameson having feelings for Avery with both Grayson and Jameson had feelings for Emily.

Wow. The cliff hanger at the end of the book? Unexpected and the second book just came out. Just take my money already!!

The boy out of time and the girl with nothing but time.

It makes you think "what would I do with immortality?" And you ponder if you're able to outlive everyone you love and do things you wouldn't have a lifetime ago. The Invisible Life Of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab is an emotional and sensual read.

Henry loved like there was no tomorrow. Or in his case, loved like he was out of time. Heartbroken he made reckless decisions.

There will be a remembrance of the story but not so much the characters. You are able to feel the emotions and thought processes of characters. Another odd thing you will come to find out is that you will emphasize with characters that you would otherwise label as the villain. I'm not sure if it's me maturing and growing up or because it was written that way.

At the beginning of the book, it was slow and a bit of a bore but around 150 pages in, you will want to keep reading. It is quite inspiring how Addie navigated a world built for men; speaking of which there was a subtle highlight of misogyny and classism.

The ending was emotional and the "epilogue" was a nice touch to end the story. If you don't read the book, I will leave you with this:

Quotes that stood out to me:
Aphrodite Airs Her Grievances
1. I belong to no one. THey never wrote that part down.
2. Regardless of whether you desire it, love is what sits at the core of the world.

The Poet Airs Her Grievances
3. I'm afraid of saying not all men and then having my face held down in the dirt by another man.
4. I'm afraid of cisgender white men.

Aphrodite Speaks On Love
5. love that doesn't last is still important / not everyone is meant to stay forever / love teaches lessons . love is more than the lessons it teaches / it does not have to be heavy / it does not have to be requited to be worthwhile / no one owes you their time or their affection . cherish your friend and the family you find with them / love has little to do with blood relations . and more to do with you choose to bleed for / it's okay to walk away from things that don't feel right / your love will always look like everyone else's / you will not always grow it same way / you will not always express it the same way / people can love each other and still be bad for each other / people can love each other and still be incompatible / love never means you have to stay . it means your heart is open / fight to keep it that way

The Poet Speaks On Love
6. It's important not to isolate yourself when you're healing but it's also important to be able to sit quietly with yourself.

Aphrodite Sings of War
7. In troy
they fought
over Helen
like children
but Achilles
mourned Patroclus
the way a soul
mourns a body.
8. When you fight for what is just, prepare to meet opposition. Remember, it is the good in us that stands in front of what needs protecting. There will always be reasons to back down but there will always be more to push forward.
9. Men wrote the myths down and called them history, and time has dragged them further from the truth. Pandora's jar became a box. Eve's pomegranate, an apple. All the details change but one: it is a woman with her hand on the door to hell.
10. The world was full of men who called themselves heroes for crossing boundaries, claiming bodies like prizes.

The Poet Sings of War
11. Your abuser's past does not absolve them of their abuse. Their depression does not absolve them of their abuse. Your relationship with them does not absolve them of their abuse. How long you've known them does not absolve them of their abuse. Your love for them does not absolve them of their abuse.
12. Accepting this body
did not mean convincing myself
that is was beautiful; it meant
giving myself permission to exist regardless

Rising
13. It is never too late
to realize
you don't want to be
on the path
you're walking.
You can never go back
but you can always
chart a new course.
14. Let me leave you with this:
your life is short and
all the more precious for it.
I do not seek
to tell you how to live, only to live at all.
to not fear the day.
the know you are strong
than what has hurt you.
to know that you will triumph.
