Helene, or rather known as Nancy Grace Augusta Wake, became one of the most powerful leaders in the French Resistance. Henri Fiocca left me with a very memorable quote, "After the war, we remember our friends and count the losses." Characters felt absolutely like as if they were real people. There was so much depth to them. The plot told in four different timelines, with different periods. My favorite part of the book was when Helene demonstrated a very powerful I told you so moment. It felt satisfying and fitting because of the men she had to deal with. One particularly well-written scene was when Henri was being tortured for information about Helene and it wouldn't give it up. I felt as it tested his loyalty and to which, it took the information to the grave. He didn't give it up even if it meant it would save his life. It was intense because I more than thought it would've given in but he didn't. Code name Helene broke my heart when Henri died. I had hope that the two would get a happy ending. They spent so little time together. The story kept me well intrigued. It took me a week to finish (I had a lot of homework that week.) I wanted to see what the strong and independent female lead was going to do next. It was grippy and fascinated. I learned about human history as the story utilized a lot of geopolitics.
One thing that made me very iffy was the different timelines. I felt as if the time jumps were too drastic and my mind couldn't stitch it together. It was meant for how the story to be told but it would've been very helpful to have it prefaced or written somewhere. By the end of the story, the timeline eventually makes a cohesive one. But during the first read, it was extremely confusing.
