Plot or Character Driven: Character

interesting little novel with something different to add to the otherwise predictable genre of vampire fiction. i do wish they had focused a little more on her relationship with her mother. i also feel like the story would have been improved if she had talked a little more about the links between colonialism and the origins of her own (and her mother's) vampirism, that was an intriguing idea.

i am so glad i found this short story collection. it spanned multiple genres, tackling themes of abuse, affection, trauma, and so many others that are relevant to being a woman, with all of its love, loss, and betrayal. ross' writing is carefully crafted, making you pause as you read, absorbing the depth of what she has to convey. wonderful writing, wonderful stories.

lyrical and yet so tragic. i have mentally included this under the holy trinity that already includes goethe's sorrows of young werther and dostoevsky's white nights.

i initially picked this book up because i was having a week of terribly low moods and contemporary litfic usually works during such periods. but man, i was constantly biting my nails out of stress for rachel - i was mad at her, depressed for her, sad for her, empathising with her, happy for her - although by the end i was satisfied with how things turned out for her.

i can definitely see where the fleabag comparisons came from. entertaining and intriguing, although the structuring had faults in it at certain points.

fictionalised account of a very real jewish mathematician, with fractal geometry being imbued with magical realist properties during the period of the holocaust. i really liked this one, i just wished it went on for more !

well, that's that. pleasing in some parts, unnecessary in others. it evoked something in me in some parts, and irritated me in others.

sudanese muslim girlhood in all its quiet hurt, loud anger, and rawness. this is my first time reading safia elhillo and i really enjoyed what she had to offer <3

glad i stumbled across this short story collection, i enjoyed the writing style (simple, clear, impactful) and the point that the author sought to convey with each tale.
