The Good Immigrant by Nikesh Shukla
5.0
This is a collection of exceptional stories. Each and every essay was beautifully written and gave me insight into a new perspective, which is what reading is all about for me. These stories, rather than dealing with heavy acts of racism and xenophobia, tell of a more 'subtle' way that society daily rejects and generalizes immigrants. Some were funny and lighthearted, while others were heartbreaking. I especially loved the second half of the book, and the essay that made the most impact on me was 'Shade', one of the last stories. I would recommend this collection to everyone - it is extremely topically relevant. Especially in the society of today, I think it is important to learn about world perspectives that are different from your own, and for myself to remind myself that I am hugely privileged, simply because of the circumstances I grew up in and the colour of my skin. I could write much more about this topic, but the point is - if you're not reading this book, then what are you waiting for?
