The book showers you with a million of insights about love but I don’t think one could ever fully internalize all the lessons she shared. It’s like having all these answers to every conflict one might face. But still none of the ability to solve it.
Maybe I’m just saying these things as a woman in her 20s who doesn’t know much about love. But this book didn’t help that much in understanding it either. Every chapter is like a neatly solved dilemma that I still don’t think fully represents what it is to love and be loved.
If I knew I was reading a story that focuses on dramatic aspects I would have rated it higher. But for a mystery I found it very lacking and was just hanging on the omission of details to keep it going. It uses the mystery aspect as a framing device for the exploration of the characters but I also feel like the characters were somewhat empty shells. They were stuck on a single archetype. The most interesting of the bunch would have to be Hannah but I feel like the story would have progressed even if she wasn’t involved.
It lacked so much active participation from the characters. They were all so passive until the end of the book. Aofie seems to be interesting but they wanted her to be unnoticeable as much as possible so readers won’t suspect her that it barely feels like she was even in the book.
I wish halfway the book, Aofie’s motive was revealed and the story would be how she would have been able to pull it of. With it being the mystery on top of just plainly wondering “who do you think will die?”
I also wish the women kind of teamed up? Or at least added something that would lead to the tragic yet deserving demise of Will. I also wish Will’s death was more tragic than just being stabbed in the dark without ever fighting back or making his “charm” the key that caused his death. I wish it was more poetic.
The book was just unsatisfactory and was just about stretching anticipation and query. Everything was just going with the blow of the wind and it seems like no one wanted to fight back or even stand their ground.
But still I kind of enjoyed reading it. It just went to a plain direction towards the end when I was expecting something grander and more meaningful.
