Despite taking place in a deadly lagoon full of alligators and snakes, this book was super cozy!

Oona and Nick’s story is sweet and steamy. I loved watching them overcome their language barrier and slowly develop feelings for each other despite their rather significant differences. Who wouldn’t want a giant lizard queen to take care of them all day?

I’ll be the first to admit that I am not a fan of mafia MMCs, but Nick took me by surprise. He is gentle and compassionate with strict personal morals, and a fierce and loyal protector of those he loves.

And, of course, Oona is an incredible and fierce boss queen who delights in inspiring fear. She’s the most dangerous thing in the entire lagoon and knows it. I loved seeing her softer moments as she explored some of her own self doubts. I have so many questions about where she came from, and I hope we’ll see more of her in the future!

My only complaints were that sometimes the wording felt repetitive, and some plot points felt like they resolved too quickly. I’m confused by the intentions of some of the other mafia members. It seemed odd that their motives changed so suddenly and they supported Nick with hardly any questions asked.
