Wish I enjoyed this one more but it was very slow overall and the plot wasn't very exciting. The romance didn't give me butterflies 💔

A surprisingly entertaining read! I really enjoyed the tension and growth between the main characters. Lesbian vampire + vampire hunter couple superiority >>>

If I had to choose a book to be the representation of my life story, this one would probably be it. *Cue the jokes on me rating my own life 3/5 stars*

I definitely went into this book with skewed expectations. Based on the description and my own hopes, I expected this to be a romance-heavy and lighthearted story. While there was a prominent romance plot, I didn’t feel the heart of it. The flowery prose, while fine within the narration, felt cringey when written in a text and spoken out loud. I also didn’t enjoy the way there were loquacious descriptions of insignificant moments, and then scenes that could have been detailed out that were given the bare minimum of text. Maybe it’s just me or the particular mood I’m in, but I just couldn’t appreciate it. The use of first and last names in dialogue also just rubbed me the wrong way here, and added to the cringe factor.

Now, to explain why I think this books hit too close to home for me personally: astronomy girl questioning her life’s path and what influence her domineering veteran father had over it, and then running across the country to avoid facing reality? Nope, doesn’t sound like me at all. It’s perhaps the heavy influence of Grace’s father on her life that left a bad taste in my mouth, since that’s a truth I’m avoiding acknowledging. I certainly do not want to think about me seeking my dad’s approval so badly that I went into a stem field just like him— just, nope!

I tried to separate my personal feeling from this rating/review as best I could, but I feel I’m failing at that. I can still, however, acknowledge this is a beautiful book, with beautiful characters and a beautiful story, hence the 3 stars. My recommendation is just to understand that this isn’t quite a fluffy, cute romance book!
