Our Brave Foremothers: Celebrating 100 Black, Brown, Asian, and Indigenous Women Who Changed the Course of History by Rozella Kennedy
5.0
The title of the book says it all! Extremely well-written short bios of 100 women who are/were change makers through America's history. There are names we all recognize and many more that we may have never heard of but after reading you have a new appreciation and admiration for the strength of women. I would not classify this as a "page turner" but more of an introspective - if Rozella Kennedy found 100 women to write about, how many more are out there who's stories need to be told?
Role Playing by Cathy Yardley

I've had this book for awhile and kept putting off reading it. What was I thinking??? I found myself laughing until the tears flowed on more than one occasion.
Maggie and her college-freshman son Kit are introverts and challenge each other to go out and meet people. Maggie decides to join an online gaming guild to "meet friends" even if they are not IRL. Her online persona, Bogwitch, meets Aiden/Otter and they develop a virtual friendship. Through a series of miscommunications Bogwitch thinks Otter is a twenty-something college student and Otter thinks she is a cussing octogenarian.
Follow their journey of gaming, self-discovery, rough times, and romance in this hilarious rom-com.

Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez

The subtitle of this book is the best descriptor - Briana Ortiz truly understands Jacob Maddox's social anxiety and this is their (fictional) story. In some ways it is a typical "girl meets boy" romance with it ups, downs, and quirks. Jimenez did her research for the social anxiety theme of the book and shows how everyone needs someone to "have their back" whether romantically, professionally, or in families.
Trust is another theme of this book as Jacob demonstrates he, a man, CAN be trusted. Briana's reference to Mr. Darby is an example of how Jacob actually listens to Briana and follows through. For me, this was a page-turner and I highly recommend this "summer read".

A Place Called Home: A Memoir by David Ambroz
5.0
I don't usually read memoirs, but as a retired school counselor/teacher who worked with many children whose lives were impacted by foster care, dysfunctional family systems, homelessness, mental illnesses, food insecurity, single-parent homes, and abject poverty, I knew I had to read this book. David Ambroz's memoir is not an easy read because he vividly recalls the stark details of his mother's mental illness and it's impact on him and his siblings, Jessica and Alex.
Years of neglect, physical and mental abuse, homelessness, poverty, and barely surviving are vividly described along with the moments when his mother is able to show her love and devotion to her children. Those moments become more rare as David grows and his mother is not treated. When David is finally able to convince a social worker and judge that his mother is a real threat and that he truly fears for his life, he is removed from her custody and moves into foster care.
The foster care system of David's childhood (1980s-1990s) was flawed and not always better for children: at that time the only goal appeared to be to get the child back to their parent(s). Adolescence is a difficult time in any child's life, but add in foster care, lapses in education due to homelessness, a faulty system, and people who foster children for the money (not to help the struggling children) and you have David's sad, painful story. Some of the homes where David were placed with not much better than being with his mother.
For as long as David could remember, he craved a "real family' with food security, staying in one school, a real home, and most of all, love. In spite of all of the negatives in David's life, he was a survivor with goals of college, getting out of poverty permanently, and making a difference in the lives of children of foster care nationwide. "A Place Called Home" is David's story of how he achieved his goals, in spite of all of the roadblocks and hurdles he had to overcome.

Yes, Chef by Waitlyn Andrews
5.0
Debut author Waitlyn Andrews knocked this one out of the kitchen! Yes, Chef is unmistakably a rom-com and a feel good page-turner. Goal oriented chefs Claire and James are both looking for that coveted Michelin star but get gobsmacked by love, despite their best efforts to avoid a relationship.
James and Claire are from successful, dynamic, yet totally opposite types of families which play significant roles in their lives. He comes from a loving, playful, supportive family of restaurateurs while her parents are work and society driven vineyard owners who try to manipulate her into marrying a jerk who is very much like her parents. You will meet their siblings (Melissa, Evie, and Lucy) and coworkers who contribute their own playful dynamics. Long story short, love prevails and you won't be disappointed.
Rumor has it that Waitlyn Andrews is already planning book two featuring Amelia Greene, Claire and Evie's favorite romance author..
