By the Book by Jasmine Guillory

By The Book is a very cute modern fairytale retelling. Jasmine Guillory is the queen of making her protagonists both realistically flawed and immensely likable. I also love a book about books and writing so having this rom com center around the writing of a memoir was very fun.

This story is not a 1:1 correspondence to the beauty & the beast fairytale— the “beast” really wasn’t that horrible and it really felt more like a friends to lovers than enemies to lovers tale—but it was fun to see all the cute Disney Easter eggs sprinkled throughout the story.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book to review.

I’ve loved Huda Fahmy’s comics for a long time. This short graphic novel about finding her identity as a hijabi Muslim teen stays true to her humorous and poignant style.

I finished reading it and then immediately slipped it into the my middle grader’s reading stack for him to read as well.
Wicked Beauty by Katee Robert

This is a super spicy Helen of Troy and Achilles and Patroclus retelling. We were introduced to Helen in the previous book in the Dark Olympus series but she’s gets her time to shine in Wicked Beauty. Helen is smart and fierce and certainly not anyone’s prize to be won. I loved Achilles and Patroclus in this book, but actually wished their relationship had gotten its own story in the series before being introduced into Helen’s story. I’m looking forward to reading more into the series.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for providing me with an advanced digital copy of this book for review.
