As a fan of Mendel's other work, namely 'Station Eleven', I was excited about her new book.

Although it was well-written and flowed easily, I can't help but feel like this book was lacking some depth. The characters and the story were a bit shallow; it felt like a a half-finished book constructed around certain plot points.

That isn't to say that the book wasn't enjoyable, quite the opposite. Rather, I feel like Mendel could've done much more with the idea and the characters.

Nonetheless, it gave me a certain sense of calmness and perspective, so it was an enjoyable read.

"I think, as a species, we have a desire to believe that we're living at the climax of the story. It's a kind of narcissism. We want to believe that we're uniquely important, that we're living at the end of history, that now, after all these millennia of false alarms, now is finally the worst that it's ever been, that finally we have reached the end of the world."
