A very tense and raw view of slavery from the pov of a 20th century person, experiencing first-hand the horrors inflicted on (and by) her ancestors. Not easy to read at times.

Yawn. I lost count of how many times it was mentioned Anita needed to shower before she actually got said shower. Like once would be enough, eh? Way too much time with her annoying family. This wedding has been imminent for like 8 books now, are we ever going to get to the altar?

Meh. Too repetitive in the beginning. Readers will understand very quickly what's going on, no need to spend chapter after chapter describing the day to day events over and over. I felt no connection to the characters and there was littl to no explanation why they acted the way they did.

The writing, stylistically, is quite good. Beautiful descriptions and settings but the pace....my gawd. I was halfway through the book and nothing. Had. Happened. I found myself skimming along to get to some action. Started good and ended up falling flat. By the time the (moderate) twists were dumped in at the end, I could not have cared less.

If this was taught as a history class the students would be asleep three pages in. Absolutely no charm or life in these pages. Surely these women deserved better.

A good pick for fans of Clarice Starling and Silence of the Lambs. Good, tense crime thriller with lots of twists. The bad? Too many POV for me. We had 3 POV, added a 4th, then added a 5th late in the game. Coupled with the 3 "XX Years Ago" flashbacks timelines, it was...a lot.

S o s l o w. So many POVs. Well written with characters you can root for...once things get rolling.
