There are those who love this book, and I get it. There are those who hate/can't finish this book, and I get it, too. I fell in between the two extremes.
Fantastic and fascinating (and creepy) Taiwanese horror that has/explores creepy dead girls, folk horror, anti-colonial themes, the mistreatment of indigenous people, invasion/occupation, cultural assimilation, class issues, and more.
There is so much going on, but it all ties together, and is quite compelling. Good stuff.
Excellent fantasy / sci-fi with a definite political point of view. The idea that "ogres = the 1%" seems simple enough at first, but the story add lots of layers. Ogres have layers - like onions. Much to ruminate on regarding our own place in this world. Good stuff.
Fun, foul-mouthed, hard-boiled, gritty, noir urban fantasy. Granted,it does have some issues w/ transphobia regarding a major character and their cohorts/minions, so please be aware going in. Other than that, is a quite funny noir tale mixed with some really cool urban fantasy world building. Plus, Henry the Formerly Feral Cat enjoyed me reading it to him while he is confined to the bathroom until he learns to properly use the litter box. We both agreed that it was a fun read.
It is rare that I read through a series one-after-another. Normally, I take a year break between books in a series. Not in this case. I dove into The Obelisk Gate right after finishing The Fifth Season . . . and I am starting The Stone Sky right away. This really is a fantastic series. The second/middle book is just as compelling as the first. Great stuff. Read this.
Absolutely fantastic and compelling fantasy (scifi?). Great world building that envelops and intrigues you without overwhelming you. This is one of those books that it almost makes you sad that you finished it (until you gleefully realize that there are two more books in the series). And, oh man, that final line makes you want to dive right into the next book. Read this!
