First this is a from the perspective of lion shifters. the world is divided the Leonodai and the creatures of the sea protecting their world from the humans. Of course humans are painted as the enemy. Rowan has wanted nothing more than to be a warrior. And she's almost there. So throughout this book, my feelings waffled. There was a love triangle -and was it just for th drama? Probably not since there really wasn't any drama - even when Rowan shows up. They were warriors and had a job to do. There was plenty of action - the fighting in the arena showed both the fierceness of the leonodai and their compassion. Something that shocked the humans. Learning to let go of the hate one has held on to for so long is a lesson that both sides had to learn. Being willing to do something about the mistakes that were made - again this fell on both sides. Even though there is betrayal, hate and stubbornness on both side, price does a good job of showing what could happen if enemies put aside their hate. what happens when the burden of magic is shared with the entire society and not just the royal bloodline. Don't get me wrong, it's not easy and good people still die. Their government is fallible and makes mistakes -costly and deadly mistakes. But they are held accountable and are also given the chance to make things right. I wouldn't say that this is a fell good/light- hearted fantasy. And it's not all happily ever afters. There is a cost for the choices made- real tangible. But the ending was optimistic.

The final book did not disappoint. Everything led to this moment, this confrontation with the kind. And man did Evie soar in this book! The long game she had been playing with Maeven, discovering what kind of queen she wanted to be, learning and accepting all of the aspects of her magic. Don't get me wrong -Evie was great at defending herself and her friends. But - for me- the best part was when she decided to stop playing everyone else's games and forced them to play hers. One of the things that I appreciate the most about Evie was that she was never above risking herself in any of the plots that she orchestrated. She never overplayed her abilities or downplayed the risks. Her eyes were wide open.

The cover was what drew my attention- the color and the art style works really well together. This continues throughout the collection. The colors and style does an amazing job of drawing the eye to certain details and making the action in the story pop.

I also enjoyed the story, though it does feel as if you entering in the middle of something, and that you might be missing out on key information. If you stick with it, you will get enough of the history for the story to make sense and to understand exactly what’s going on. Yonna is an interesting character and I don’t think we really got to know her in this volume. But that makes me hope for another volume so that we can continue to get to know here and her ragtag group. Something tells me that her story is far from over. If all we have is one shot at Yonna’s story than I think that this would have been better as a full length novel. But if there are more volumes to come, and I really hope that there is, than is a great beginning volume. I am not sure what else Erman has written, but I am definitely interested in checking out more of his work.
