Much adored book from childhood. Still adored now, even if I’m now connecting more with Marilla than Anne, and yes, Matthew’s death still made me cry.

An enjoyable wander back into the lives of favourite childhood characters: Marilla and Matthew.
Modern lens turned onto a classic with the integration of historical events that lift it from the microcosm of Avonlea.

Being a tacophile myself, this was an informative, reflective read. I look forward to a few years hence when I get to wander some of Britain’s graveyards. I liked how he went beyond the famous - cemeteries included, into the lesser known, but no less poignant and fascinating.

What a beautifully crafted text. Informative and poetic. Exploring death and graves on both the micro and macro level; the well known to the quietly personal.

I’ve long been fascinated with Pompeii. This narrative has zero focus on the eruption of Mt Vesuvius, instead focusing on every day life, and the lives of slave women. I’m looking forward to reading the second in the series.

Well-researched and engaging. Still getting my head around over 100,000 dead as a result of King William’s revenge on the north. Came to this more serious text after David Mitchell’s lighter (but still very informative) Unruly.

I’m continuing to really enjoy this series. Not going stale at all. I’m finding it interesting how the books continue to connect with non-fiction readings I’ve been doing. In this case, it’s touching on the Spanish Inquisition.

What a powerful novel. Hybrid and multi genres. Lyrical. Masterful creation of varying voices that reflect the differing sections. I did find the first section a challenge to engage with and put the text down for a few months, but so glad I picked it up again. The audio version enhances the overall experience and I will be returning to this one.

Clever exploration of our addiction to our devices and social media, in particular. Over the top but deliciously so.
