Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer
4.0
I read this a few years ago after seeing the movie (which I loved) and wanted to return to it again and continue with the books that follow it. Did not disappoint the second time around!
Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney
4.0
This was the first novel by Alice Feeney I’ve read and based on how much I enjoyed it, it will not be the last! Half of the fun of this book was how much I thought about it after and reading message boards of readers discussing their interpretation.
My Husband by Maud Ventura
4.5
This book is 50% if the unsustainable worries of young love never matured and 50% a slow burn into complete delusion! Fun!
The Gift of Therapy: An Open Letter to a New Generation of Therapists and Their Patients by Irvin D. Yalom
4.0
A wonderful resource for therapists, as well as people who have exhausted therapy but miss the practice.
Machine of Death by Matthew Bennardo, Ryan North, David Malki
5.0
34 short stories by different authors with the same prompt about a machine that tells you how you will die. The culmination of 34 different perspectives world-building around the same new element was so unique and fascinating, it became one of my favorite collections.
The Last Word by Taylor Adams
4.5
This thriller is going to be hard to beat and actually gave me nightmares. I can’t count how many times I said “nooooo” out loud during this story or how many times I thought it was coming to a conclusion only to be completely shocked by the next twist. Really enjoyed every terrifying minute!
The Turn of the Screw by Henry James
2.5
I wanted to read this for context on newer books inspired by it, but the ending left me feeling like “oh, that was it?” However, it is from 1898 so taste in thrillers is probably a little desensitized compared to its original audience.
A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham
3.5
A fun read, a bit of a predictable twist but an enjoyable ride along the way.
The Last Devil to Die by Richard Osman
5.0
5-stars because I’ve never cried into pages like I did with this book, I had to take breaks in reading because I was hurting so much and using up too many tissues. Anything that can make me feel such real grief gets full marks.
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt
4.5
Wonderful narration. A heart-warming and comfortable story to watch unfold.
