Ordinary Monsters

DID NOT FINISH: 59%

This book was a mess, the author pisses me off, and I had the book club to go to. I read the synopsis before book club and thank GOD I didn't force myself to finish. Charlie's power seems weirdly racially charged, and his treatment irregular.

The premise of this book is so intriguing that I have wanted to read it since I was probably about 14. Our protagonist finds out that he is dying from Mad Cow Disease and embarks on a fantastical journey that follows the beats of Don Quixote. The overall writing style is a bit goofy and immature, a symptom of being publis ed in 2009. The high school lingo and humor is a bit like what adults think teenagers are like (the John Green effect, if you will). That being said, there are some real pearls in the sand. Overall worth reading, but maybe just for me.

Between the love interest who is just straight up a real historical figure, a morally grey and unreliable narrator, time travel, and the constant allusion to a disaster at the end of the book, I am speechless. Yes I stayed up late at least twice reading this. Yes I avoided it most of the day because it was very foreboding. I don't know if I'll ever be over this book, mostly because.... What the heck did I just read

Plastic surgery before penicillin is CRAZYYYYY. The way we didn't know how to properly use anesthesia or sterilize things and yet this man remade faces is absolutely bonkers. I learned so much!
