There were a number of reasons I did not like this book. Among the chief reasons was that it was poorly written and edited. It was as though not much effort was put into writing the book. It was poorly constructed, repetitive and some sentences just failed to be completed. Very poor.
This one had me almost from the very beginning and I was really enjoying this strange tale of another world - but then right in the heart of the tale, it was interrupted by an imposed and unnecessary romance. It was not a good fit and reduced greatly my enjoyment of the story... and so my rating of the book reflects my disappointment.
If this book was simply about the mystery and not the 'romance,' it could very well be a decent book. It is not the better for the romance, rather the worse. Disappointing.
It is widely known how terrible things are in North Korea, but this account of someone who managed to get out of North Korea is a revelation. All of the horror that we may think is North Korea, it is nothing contrasted with the reality portrayed in this biographical account. It is heartbreaking, sad, horrific ... and many, many, many more graphic adjectives of unpleasantness. Those poor people - how blessed we are to not suffer what they suffer day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, decade after decade... so very sad.
