I almost put this book down so many times while getting through the first 1/3 because the characters felt like caricatures and the plot felt basic… but then I re-read the description and had hope that my reactions were intended, even planned. I’m glad I finished it because I’ve thought about how the story evolved and ended several times since completing it. A good experience overall, but any summary of this book must come with the warning that it took awhile to get into, and felt very basic and unsubtle, without a lot of subtle nuance or depth to the characters.

I learned a lot about Cajun culture and history and enjoyed the ways time and people wove together in this audiobook, but the writing was distractingly basic. I knew what was going to happen before it did, and although I appreciated the attempt at telling an intercultural story, the only characters that were well-developed were those with power over others. The ethnic diversity perpetuated familiar societal stories of people with less money making life easier for colonists of European descent.
