A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
4.0
The only John Irving book that I've read, but it was excellent. A lengthy and masterfully told journey that enters you into at a specific time and place and guides you through each agonizing and triumphant step.
The Help by Kathryn Stockett
3.0
This was a fun read, it may be a little overdone now that it's been produced into a movie that seemed to lose the grave undertone. While enjoyable, it was written too neatly for a book club. Some of the social issues were forced and completely anachronistic for the period. This book could have resonated more greatly had it focused on one or two main themes and really explicated them. To me, reading this was like eating french fries, pizza, and fried chicken. All simple and delicious in their own right, but thrown together, they make a messy amalgam of a meal.
